Buying

Does the Luba 3 AWD need a subscription?

The Luba 3 uses network RTK positioning instead of a physical reference station in your yard, and that network service is a subscription. Mammotion has been bundling it free for an initial period with the mower, three years according to current testers. Check the listing for the exact terms on the day you buy. Everything else, the app, the mapping, the LiDAR, works without a subscription.

Which Luba 3 AWD model should I buy?

The 1500 covers up to about 0.37 acre, the 3000 up to about 0.75, and the 5000 up to about 1.25. The H models cut higher, 2.2 to 4 inches instead of 1 to 2.7, which is what you want for tall fescue and most northern lawns kept at 3 inches or more. If you are near a size limit, step up. The price gap between the 1500 and 3000 is small. We own the 1500H.

Does it need a boundary wire or an RTK antenna?

No to both. You walk the perimeter with the app to map the yard, and network RTK replaces the reference antenna that older Luba models and Husqvarna EPOS mowers require. No ladder, no roof mount.

Is the Luba 3 worth $500 more than the Luba 2?

Only if you have trees, shade, or narrow spots where GPS gets blocked, or you want reliable night cutting. That is what the LiDAR buys you. On an open, sunny yard the Luba 2 AWD climbs the same slopes for less money.

Living with it

Does the Luba 3 AWD mow in the rain?

It has a rain sensor. By default it heads back to the dock when it detects rain and resumes after a delay you set. You can override that, but do not. Wet grass clumps, wet slopes are where turf gets torn, and the mower will just go back out a few hours later on its own.

Is it safe around dogs and kids?

Yes with normal sense. The cameras and LiDAR see and route around people and pets, testers have run dog avoidance tests successfully, and the blades stop the instant the mower is lifted or tilted. Small objects around an inch in size can still be missed, so pick up toys and hoses first. The easiest answer is to schedule it when the yard is empty. Ours mostly runs during the day and sometimes finishes after dark.

How loud is it?

Quiet enough to run at night in a suburban neighborhood. It is an electric motor and small blades. Most of what you hear is grass.

How well does it cut edges?

It gets close and has an edge mode, but no wire free robot mower replaces the string trimmer entirely. Plan on edging every week or two if you care about crisp lines.

How long does a charge last and how long does it take to cut?

Roughly three hours of runtime per charge on level ground, less on slopes. A quarter acre lot gets done in one session. Larger lots run multiple sessions, and the mower manages that itself: it docks, charges, and picks up where it left off.

Can it handle multiple zones, like a front and back yard?

Yes. You map each zone and draw a channel between them. The channel is where new owners make mistakes: it needs to be wide enough for the mower to navigate comfortably, and gates need to stay open on mowing days.

Security and maintenance

Can it be stolen?

Anyone can pick it up, but it is worthless to them. It is locked to your account with a PIN, it has a lift alarm, and its position shows in the app. Leaving the mapped area triggers an alert.

What maintenance does it need?

Rinse the deck and check the blades every few weeks. The blades are small and cheap, and swapping them takes minutes. Keep the LiDAR dome and cameras clean. That is most of it.

How do you store it for winter?

Bring the mower and the charging station inside before hard frost. Clean it, charge the battery to about half rather than full, and store it above freezing. The map stays saved in the app, so spring is putting the dock back out and pressing go.

What if the app or the RTK signal drops?

This is where the Luba 3 is different from RTK only mowers. If network RTK drops, the LiDAR keeps it positioned and cutting. If the app loses connection, the mower keeps running the schedule it already has. See problems and fixes for the specific errors owners hit and what to do.
